Eliminate tension, build muscle and stamina, but also lose weight and at the same time get rid of dreaded cellulite: skipping is the easiest and most accessible activity for toning up and feeling good about your body, anywhere and in any season.
Who said skipping was only for the playground? Easy and fun, this sport does it all: tones your lower body and abs, develops arm muscles and improves balance, heart rate and stamina.
“In 15 minutes of skipping, you can burn more than 180 calories.” Laura Abittan
And let’s not forget, helps you lose weight! “In 30 minutes of skipping, you can hope to burn between 300 and 400 calories”, explains Laura Abittan, sports coach in Casablanca. “And if you do three sessions a week, you will very quickly have visible results”. It’s hardly surprising that it’s one of the most popular sports with Victoria’s Secret models, in particular as a complement to their boxing classes…
WHAT TECHNIQUES FOR WHAT EFFECT?
- Classic with feet together: simple and effective to get the entire body moving. While jumping, ensure you keep your back straight and stretch your spinal column upwards as much as possible.
- Alternating feet: jump on one foot after the other to use the lower body, and in particular the thighs, more intensely;
- High knees: similar to alternating feet but lifting the knees as high as possible, at varying speeds, which makes it possible to increase muscular and cardiovascular capabilities;
- Double unders: here, you spin the rope twice and jump once, which implies a quicker rhythm, but also makes it possible to burn twice as many calories with each jump, clever!
THE PERFECT PROGRAMME?
“For maximum efficacy, I recommend combining skipping with a HIIT programme (High Intensity Interval Training)”, continues Laura. For example: “20 seconds press-ups, 20 seconds skipping, 20 seconds pull-ups, 20 seconds skipping, 20 seconds squats, 20 seconds skipping before finishing with 1 minute recovery and repeat the circuit five times.”
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?
It’s easy and all you need is a good skipping rope which costs between 39 DH and 99 DH depending on the model! You should buy yourself a suitable sports bra and trainers for good stability and good support for the ankles to cushion the jumps. Finally, the length of the skipping rope depends on your height. A good tip is to place your foot on the skipping rope and ensure the handles come up to the armpits. If this is the case, then you’re all set!
ARE THERE CONTRAINDICATIONS?
“Skipping is a high-impact activity, in particular for the ankles, knees and hips so I would not recommend it for anyone who is overweight, has back problems or high blood pressure, pregnant women or women who have recently given birth” concludes Laura. For anyone else, skipping can only be beneficial. Especially when you’re lucky enough to live by the sea.
